United States Navy Hull Numbers

Since 1920

The first edition of United States Navy Hull Numbers was published in May 1995, following the publication of our first work, Military Aircraft Designations and Systems. Since then, we have been working diligently to update and upgrade my work. The result is the Expanded and Updated 2nd Edition, published in September 2004, which features more information in a much more easier to access format.

The greatest change of the New and Updated 2nd Edition is it now has been renamed. As I have been proceeding through the seemingly endless US Navy Hull Numbers used since 1920 (and before), what impacted me most was the sheer number of them -- enough, it appears, to justify more than one volume. Therefore, there will actually be two volumes of United States Navy Hull Numbers. The first, Volume 1, published in September of 2004, is subtitled Major Combatants. This volume features the US Navy's major warship types -- Battleships, Cruisers, Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, Submarines, etc. Volume 2 will be subtitled Auxiliaries and Support Vessels, and will feature such types as cargo ships, support and replenishment ships, mine layers, etc. The long range plan for Volume 2 is to be published in the Fall of 2012.

The change will only enhance the quality of, what is now called, Volume 1 -- Major Combatants, as I can spend more time on the major types before returning to the auxiliaries next year and spend the time need to do justice to them in the same manner.

I look forward to updating this page.
